Acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. It involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissues at specific points on the body to assist in treating a variety of painful disorders, both acute and chronic. “Traditional” acupuncture, which was developed in China hundreds of years ago and found to be successful even without the benefit of modern medical knowledge, aims to balance energy and blood in the body in order to keep it functional and healthy. With extensive research in western medicine, we have gained a better understanding of how acupuncture works which has led to a more modern approach taken by many western-trained acupuncture therapists, known as “anatomical” acupuncture. Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain-relieving chemicals known as “endorphins,” which mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found throughout the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in relief of pain, general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body’s own internal regulation systems. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture simulates the body’s natural healing abilities, reducing inflammation and promoting physical and emotional well-being. At HFP, our therapist has been integrating anatomical acupuncture into her practice for more than 16 years. It is commonly used as a complimentary, rather than a stand-alone approach which enables us to provide comprehensive treatments to each of our patients.

At Health First Physiotherapy, our orthotics are prescription, custom-tailored inserts that can be transferred from shoe to shoe. They are designed to provide optimal support and restore the proper alignment of the foot to help the muscles, tendons and bones of your feet and lower legs function at their highest potential. By correcting the biomechanical problems related to your medical condition, custom foot orthotics can decrease pain and inflammation not only in your feet but also in other parts of the body such as your knees, hips, and lower back. A complete biomechanical and gait assessment is performed by our fully trained and licensed physiotherapist. Based on the assessment, if custom foot orthotics are appropriate for you or your condition, a 3-D contact digitizer scan is obtained by capturing the exact contour of your feet in their ideal functional position. The custom-made orthotics are manufactured from the 3-D image of your feet using raw materials. This usually takes 2 weeks and is followed by a dispensing appointment to ensure a proper fit to your footwear and to verify that the desired biomechanical correction has been achieved. Our therapist will take this opportunity to educate you on proper wear and care of your new orthotics to ensure optimal success in the management of your medical condition.

Meet the owners, JF and Nicol Bernier. Nicol was born and raised on a farm near St. Paul, AB which is what brought the 2 of them back to the community to start their family. After nearly a decade spent studying at the University of Alberta each earning first a Science Degree and secondly a Physical Therapy degree, they settled back to the area to work as physiotherapists for the former Lakeland Region. After a few years getting their feet wet working in the public system, they decided to branch out to Bonnyville. In 2003, they established their own practice: Health First Physiotherapy. Since that time the clinic has relocated and expanded to meet the growing need in the community. The clinic currently has 10 staff members providing multidisciplinary services from physiotherapy, acupuncture and massage therapy, to speech language pathology and occupational therapy for school aged children. On evenings and weekends they can often be spotted at sporting events, volunteering to coach or manage a multitude of school and community teams ranging from hockey or volleyball to soccer or softball. JF’s true passion remains driving fast cars, while Nicol would prefer kayaking on a calm lake or taking quiet walks with their dog Chevy.
